Les vrais hommes, 2014, 26 mn 18

Production : Académie de France à Rome, Villa Médicis

Les Vrais Hommes / (Real Men) is a film shot in Italy, in the Tremiti Islands, on the Adriatic coast.  Homosexuals were deported here under Mussolini between 1928 and 1945.  This crime would not always be recognized by the Italian state.  I made the most of my time at the Villa Médicis, the French Academy in Rome, where I was studying visual arts, to explore that historical island site.  This visual, wandering and contemplative proposition highlights a group of idyllic isles mixing the beauty of vegetation and the beauty of the sea with the silence of a sinister past.  Italian fascist music and resistance songs punctuate the editing.  The images are accompanied by several reports.  According to Mussolini, homosexuality did not exist in his country. He declared: “In Italy, there are only real men”. RY

Hashima mon amour, 2014, 38 mn

Production : Les films de l’air - Nora Philippe

Off the coast of Nagasaki, I land on the shores of Hashima, an abandoned island which was once an important mining site until the day when, in 1974, its population was brutally expelled.  I collect archives about that bygone life, I visit those ruins the way I visit my memory, in search of a missing image.  AV-L.
