QUE LA BÊTE MEURE

The following films convey an assimilation of man to beast.

The end of Claude Chabrol’s film Que la bête meure, 1969, refers to this: “There is a serious song by Brahms which paraphrases Ecclesiastes: The beast must die; but man too. Both must die.”

Book of Ecclesiastes, 3,19-21: “Surely the fate of human beings is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath; humans have no advantage over animals. Everything is meaningless. All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return. Who knows if the human spirit rises upward and if the spirit of the animal goes down into the earth?”

Production les inquiets

Preaching to birds, to persuade them to distribute tales of people who talk little, so that they will bear the news of the shipwreck under way. The birds are a radio wave. They carry the tales into unsuspected places. “When the cruel wind dismantles seas, scrambles skies, topples mountains, devours cities and destroys provinces, it turns the world into a shipwreck.” LW

Teheran Zoo

2009,10 mn

Experimental documentary that portrays the wildlife zoo in Tehran. Have we become disturbed, like animals in cages? What have modern inhabitations done to us? Have we built our own cages? These are ideas explored in this short film from Iran. The film makers have been able to step back from the noise to show a lucid view of the hazards of modern mass coexistence and its management; psychological hazards, which, for humans, are the most difficult to resolve. A frisky three-legged dog is playing in front of a classic fountain. The postures and equilibrium of its body differ from what the eye expects. He quietly defies the laws of empathy. Here we have two sculptural systems face to face. DC
