The cycle of intensity, 2018, 10 min

The Intensity Cycle was carried out with members of the Koya community of the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia. It is an act of resistance against the advance of large mining companies seeking to extract lithium from their sacred lands and a warning signal against the danger of their disappearance.

Since 1988, Charly Nijensohn has traveled the Altiplano performing a performative action with the local inhabitants. As the social conditions of communities in the region deteriorate from year to year, their scarce water supplies are being polluted by large mining companies. The war triggered by lithium results in greater poverty for the inhabitants of the region, the loss of their sacred spaces and the consequent disappearance of their culture and their cosmogony.

Charly Nijensohn was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He has lived and worked in Berlin for twenty years.
